The United Nations Global Compact Network Kenya on Tuesday pledged to assist the country’s businesses to expand their role in helping it achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Judy Njino, executive director of Global Compact Network Kenya said the unit is keen to help corporates align their operations and strategies with the ten universal principles of the UN global compact in the areas of labor, environment and anti-corruption.

“Our ambition is to accelerate and scale the collective impact of business by delivering the sustainable development goals through accountable companies and ecosystems that enable change,” she said when National Bank of Kenya (NBK) signed up to the UN Global Compact, reinforcing its commitment to uphold and protect labor, environment, and anti-corruption principles through its business practices.

Njino said that the organization is eager to support corporations to modify their business strategies to ensure they support access to clean water, sanitation, decent work, economic growth as well as industry innovation.

She revealed that the way business is conducted has fundamentally changed because sustainability is no longer an option but a business imperative that drives competitiveness.

Njino added that the global compact network will facilitate companies to cut through the complexity so that they build trust and transparency and help shape the world’s sustainability agenda.

“Together, through bold actions and collaboration between all sectors of society, we can end extreme poverty and hunger, fight inequalities and address water and sanitation issues, ensuring no one is left behind,” she said. Enditem
