Head of the UN Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO) Martin Kobler on Wednesday urged the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) government to exhume bodies buried in a mass grave in Maluku, some 80 km from Kinshasa.
“Investigations should be transparent and credible,” Kobler said, adding that “MONUSCO will offer the government any necessary support.”
“It is very easy to resolve this issue and end the rumors. The government should do this by exhuming the bodies, but we can only offer our assistance,” he insisted.
In March this year, over 400 bodies were discovered in a mass grave in Maluku territory .
In a statement issued on Tuesday this week, Human Rights Watch called for the exhumation of the bodies buried in the mass grave.
“This mass grave could contain bodies of victims of forced disappearance or executions committed by the Congolese security forces,” Human Rights Watch said, adding that families of 34 victims had filed a case at the public prosecutor’s office requesting for the exhumation of bodies in the mass grave.
