An official from the United Nations refugee agency will visit Zambia to assess the refugee situation in the southern African nation, an emailed release said on Friday.

Valentin Tapsoba, regional director for southern Africa of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), will be on a 10-day visit to Zambia from Nov. 14, according to the release from the UNHCR office in Zambia.

UNHCR Country Representative Pierrine Aylara said the visit is a sign of appreciation the UN agency has on Zambia’s long-standing and commendable record in hosting refugees and helping them, including local integration and voluntary repatriation.

During the visit, Tapsoba is scheduled to hold consultative meetings with senior government officials, UN agencies and other key stakeholders on issues related to policy, funding, and the implementation of the refugee program in Zambia, the release said.

He will also visit some refugee settlements, where he will engage with refugees and other persons of concern and hold discussions with local authorities and partners on the key achievements and challenges encountered in providing protection, assistance and durable solutions, it said.

Zambia currently hosts some 103,000 refugees and other persons of concern, the release said. Enditem
