It said in a statement that the projects would be carried out by Medicos com Africa (Doctors with Africa), an Italian non-governmental organization.

Speaking on state-owned Radio Mozambique, Artur Silva of Medicos com Africa said that the projects would include those on the health of mothers and children.

Mother and child mortality is a headache for the southern African country with around 25 million people.

The Health Ministry says that it has been doing its best to prevent the killer disease AIDS, especially to prevent pregnant mothers from transmitting the HIV to children.

AIDS infection rate in Mozambique stands at 34 percent and one and a half million people have died of AIDS since it was spotted in 1986 in the country.

Sofala is one of the major provinces hit by AIDS. Enditem
