Unrest in Ethiopia’s Oromia regional state located in the central part of the country has left one person dead, state media outlet Ethiopia Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) reported on Monday.

EBC reported the unrest which happened on the weekend in Assela city, Oromia regional state left one person dead, before joint efforts by religious and community leaders quelled the unrest. The deadly unrest also left extensive property damage.

EBC further reported further consultative meetings are being held within the various communities living Assela city, to prevent a recurrence of the weekend unrest.

The unrest in Assela reportedly started as a dispute between two group of youths, but quickly took on a religious dimension pitting Christian and Muslim youths armed with sticks and stones against each other.

Religious disputes are relatively rare in Ethiopia which has large Christian and Muslim population.

However, in recent years rising conservatism among both Christian and Islamic denominations has occasionally spilled over into deadly ethnic clashes. Enditem
