The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Thursday called on the eastern-based army to stop all military action in Libya for fight against coronavirus.
“UNSMIL urges the ‘Libyan National Army’ to follow suit and calls upon all parties to cease the fighting and join forces to protect Libyans from the catastrophic consequences of this pandemic that spares no one,” UNSMIL said in a statement. UNSMIL welcomed the UN-backed government’s “positive response to international calls for an immediate humanitarian pause to enable various Libyan authorities to respond rapidly to the threat posed by the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Libya.”
Arab and western countries on Tuesday called on the Libya’s rival parties to stop ongoing military action in the country in order to allow authorities to respond to the coronavirus. The eastern-based army has been leading a military campaign since April 2019 in and around the capital Tripoli, attempting to take over the city and topple the UN-backed government. The fighting killed and injured thousands of people and forced more than 150,000 civilians to flee their homes. Libya’s UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez Serraj on Saturday declared state of emergency and mobilization against possible coronavirus outbreak in the country. E
