Upper East: Police Officer Suspected to Have Committed Suicide

A police officer with the Garu police command in the Upper East Region, Constable Peace Agbemefo, was found dead in her room on Monday afternoon with a gunshot wound.

The Garu police commander, ASP Alexander Tieku confirmed the death to Citi News but declined to comment on the matter adding that, the death had been reported to the Bawku divisional police commander, Chief Superintendent Yao Tettegah.

There are reports that the death could have been a suicide but Superintend Tettegah, in the meantime, quelled speculation that the deceased shot herself.

He added that the matter will be investigated in due course to ascertain the death of the deceased.

Suspected suicide

Sources from the Garu police command indicated that Constable Peace Agbemefo committed suicide in her room in Garu after she returned from duty at a GN Bank branch.

The source further stated that after several attempts to hang herself and then cut herself failed, she resorted to an AK 47 rifle, which she had booked for duty, and shot herself.

There, however, was no suicide note.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary of the Bolgatanga regional hospital for autopsy.
