Long hindered by inadequate sports infrastructure, the Upper West Region is set to experience significant upgrades with the recent initiatives spearheaded by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.
For over forty years, the Wa Park, or Malik Jabir Sports Stadium, has been the region’s primary venue, but its deteriorated condition has limited local sports participation and development.
Bagbin has catalyzed progress by supporting the construction of new sports facilities, including an ultramodern astroturf at Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) and McCoy College of Education.
On August 26, 2024, Bagbin inaugurated the McCoy College astroturf, laying the foundation for SDD-UBIDS’s sports stadium.
The McCoy College facility features a 110-meter by 75-meter pitch, running tracks, tennis and volleyball courts, and additional amenities.
The SDD-UBIDS project will replicate these features, creating a foundation for future stadium development.
Bagbin highlighted the strategic importance of these facilities, noting that they will support educational and athletic growth.
Rev. Father Peter Paul Yeletuo of McCoy College emphasized the astroturf’s role in fostering physical development and community cohesion.
At the same time, Prof. Emmanuel Derbile of SDD-UBIDS stressed its alignment with the university’s educational goals.
The region will soon expand its sports infrastructure with a multipurpose youth resource centre, complementing facilities like the Tumu astroturf.
These developments enhance the training opportunities for local youth, potentially transforming the region’s sports landscape.
