An Indonesian court on Tuesday found a US man and his fianc?e guilty of premeditated murder and sentenced them to a total of 28 years in prison over the killing of the woman’s mother on the island of Bali.
Tommy Schaefer was given 18 years and Heather Lois Mack 10 years for murdering Sheila von Wiese-Mack in August, when the three were vacationing on the island.
Wiese-Mack’s body was found in a suitcase in the trunk of a taxi outside a hotel in Bali. Indonesian prosecutors charged Schaefer and Mack with murdering Wiese-Mack after an argument about the couple’s relationship.
Police said she died in her hotel room after being hit with a glass ashtray and a fruit bowl.
Lawyers for Mack, who was accused of being an accessory to the murder, had urged the judges to show leniency. Prosecutors had sought a 15-year prison term for Mack, who gave birth last month.
