The University Teachers Association of Ghana, University of Cape Coast Branch (UTAG-UCC), has strongly criticized the University Council’s unilateral decision to terminate Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor.

UTAG-UCC contends that the termination, conveyed in a letter dated July 31, 2024, is invalid and violates ongoing court orders restraining such actions. These court orders were issued in response to a previous attempt to terminate Prof. Boampong’s appointment, indicating a pattern of disregard for due process.

According to UTAG-UCC, the Council Chair’s assertion that Prof. Boampong’s term renewal breaches university statutes and the constitution is baseless.

They argue that the renewal complied with all legal and statutory requirements, making the Council Chair’s actions arbitrary and unjustified.

Prof. Boampong’s initial four-year term concluded on July 31, 2024, with an alleged extension for an additional two years. However, Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, the Council Chair, declared this extension null and void, pending further deliberation.

UTAG-UCC has made a firm demand for the immediate withdrawal of the termination letter. They accuse the Council Chair of acting in bad faith and making unilateral decisions, which they assert undermine university governance.

The Association has called the government to reconsider the Council Chair’s appointment.

UTAG-UCC reiterates its unwavering commitment to vigilantly monitor the situation and take all necessary steps to safeguard the institution’s integrity and uphold the rights of its members.

UTAG-UCC underscores the vital importance of adhering to the university’s legal and statutory frameworks. Any deviation from these principles will be met with resolute resistance in the pursuit of justice and fairness.
