The Keta Municipal Health Directorate in the Volta Region has vaccinated a total of 10,596 of children under five years during the recent measles-rubella vaccination campaign within the Keta Municipality.
The target was 12,000 children but 10,596 was recorded representing 88.3 per cent.
The vaccination exercise, which commenced on October 2 to October 6, 2024, has targeted children within nine months to five years, and was aimed at eradicating measles and rubella sickness among children in the Municipality.
Madam Dora Kugbonu, the Keta Municipal Health Promotion Officer, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, stated that the Municipality has been adjudged third highest in measles-rubella vaccination exercise among the 18 districts in the region.
Vitamin A supplement was also provided to children within the age range during the exercise to address the vitamin A deficiency among children.
“We have been able to vaccinate close to 12,000 children during the five-day period, which made us the third highest in the region,” she stated.
Madam Kugbonu further disclosed that her outfit visited various communities, schools, churches, mosques, households, among others during the exercise.
She congratulated the health medical teams, teachers, parents and general public for various roles played for a successful and smooth campaign during the vaccination period.
“One major challenge we faced during the exercise was how some private schools’ teachers have prevented us from getting access to children in their schools to take part in vaccinated during the period.”
She appealed to the public to collaborate with the Municipal Health Directorate in subsequent vaccination and other health related exercises to eradicate any sickness in the area.
She also stated that a polio vaccination exercise would commence in the municipality in the coming days and the public should embrace the move to help save lives of children against the sickness.
