The residents of Asankragua cluster of villages in the Wassa Amenfi West District of Western Region have called on the Government to rehabilitate the feeder roads in the area.

Communities along the Bawdie-Asankragua main road are the most affected with deplorable feeder and town roads in the District.

Nana Ayisi Kwoffie, an opinion leader, who spoke to the GNA in an interview said the people expected the government to award the roads on contract to facilitate the movement of passengers and goods.

He said the farmers could not transport their cocoa beans, palm fruits, plantains, oranges and other food crops to the commercial centres.

The situation deprives community members of income as transport owners refuse to ply the routes for fear of damaging their vehicles on the bumpy roads.

He said the communities were not benefiting from the Government’s educational policy as the District Assembly and the Education Directorate remained adamant to their plea for a community school.

According to him, school-going children had to walk long distance to attend school and that during the rainy season some rivers, without bridge, overflowed their banks, making it difficult for children to cross.

Nana Kwoffie said several people suffered from fever, malaria and snake bites but the District Community Health officials were not able to reach out to them.

He expressed worry about the negative activities of chainsaw operators in the area, especially the wanton destruction of the forest and farms as well as the destruction of roads by heavy timber trucks.
