Johnny Depp has revealed he has been nearly blind in one eye since he was born.

The actor claimed he had no vision in his left eye, saying it was ?basically blind as a bat?.

He is also near-sighted in his right eye and relies heavily on his prescription glasses.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor, who is rarely seen without tinted specs, said he can only see a few inches from his face if he plays a character who does not wear glasses or shades.

He added: ?Everything is just very, very blurry. I?ve never had proper vision.?

His revelation came as he spoke about his split from Vanessa Paradis for the first time.

The couple are trying to ?make the best of it? for the sake of their children.

Depp, 50, and the model ended their 14-year relationship last summer and he is now dating his Rum Diary co-star Amber Heard.

Speaking about the split, he told the Rolling Stone: ?The last couple years have been a bit bumpy.

?At times, certainly unpleasant, but that?s the nature of break-ups, I guess, especially when there are kiddies involved.

?Relationships are very difficult, especially in the racket that I?m in because you?re constantly away or they?re away and so it?s hard. It wasn?t easy on her. It wasn?t easy on me. It wasn?t easy on the kids.

?It doesn?t stop the fact that you care for that person, and they?re the mother of your kids, and you?ll always know each other, and you?re always going to be in each other?s lives because of those kids. You might as well make the best of it.?

Depp also said he was putting Lily-Rose, 14, and Jack, 11, first, adding: ?You can?t shield them, because then you?d be lying. So you can at least be honest with your kids, and you say the absolute truth to your child ? that was very important to not pussyfoot around.?

And he admits his new-found sobriety helped him with that: ?I definitely wasn?t going to rely on the drink to ease things or cushion the blow or cushion the situation, ?cause that could have been fatal.?

Meanwhile, the Hollywood star also suggested he might retire when he hits 60.

Depp, whose hobbies include making music, admitted he thought about giving up acting ?every day? but would not relish an idle life.

He said: ?At a certain point, just take it down to the bare minimum and concentrate on, I guess, living life. Really living life. And going somewhere where you don?t have to be on the run, or sneak in through the kitchen or the underground labyrinth of the hotel.

Retirement plan … actor says he thinks about quitting Hollywood ‘every day’ – could music be a second career?

“At a certain point, when you get old enough or get a few brain cells back, you realise that, on some level, you lived a life of a fugitive.?

But he added: ?I don?t know if I can relax. Relax, I can?t do. My brain, on idle, is a bad thing. I just get weird. I mean, not weird. I get, I get antsy.?
