To help mitigate the effects of the novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), especially on front liners, Vodafone Ghana Foundation on Friday presented medical supplies including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Ga East Municipal Hospital.
The support was the way Vodafone chose to mark the National May Day and International Labour Day celebration, which falls on May 1 of every year, to acknowledge the efforts and dedication all workers.
The supplies comprised sets of protective gowns with shoe covers, face shields, boxes of N95 face masks, surgical gloves, infrared thermometer, hand sanitizers, gallons of rubbing alcohol and bleach, boxes of surface wipes and bin liners.
Mrs Geta Striggner-Quartey, the Director for Legal and External Affairs, Vodafone Ghana, said Vodafone appreciated the heroic works being done by the front-liners to manage the outbreak in the country.
“We are happy to be here to support our Super heroes, who have helped in various capacities to manage the COVID-19,” she said, adding that “On behalf of the Board Chair of Vodafone Foundation, Dr Joyce Aryee, I want to say we are so proud of you and we encourage you to keep up with the good work”.
Vodafone Ghana Foundation, Mrs Striggner-Quartey said, would also donate similar items to health facilities managing COVID-19 cases in the Ashanti and Eastern Regions.
Mrs Striggner-Quartey said Vodafone had established a call centre manned by 50 medical doctors, who speak seven languages to give expert advice and provide guidance to customers from 0800 to 2000 hours every day to help to dispel the misinformation about the COVID-19.
The Call Centre could be accessed by dialing 255 from any Vodafone or MTN number.
She said Vodafone had also modified its key products to offer relief to customers and was supporting businesses with the needed tools to enjoy mobility whilst working from home.
Dr Ebenezer Oduro-Mensah, the Medical Superintendent of the Ga East Municipal Hospital, who received the items expressed an appreciation to Vodafone Ghana Foundation on behalf of the Management, staff and patients.
“Vodafone has really done well and I can see the items brought are even getting taller than me. Vodafone has demonstrated through varied ways to be at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19 and we are most grateful for that,” he said.
He commended the telecom company for establishing a COVID-19 call centre and expressed an optimism that it will help to meet the health needs of the public.
Dr Oduro-Mensah appealed to other corporate organisations to emulate the gesture by Vodafone and go to their aid in the fight against the respiratory disease.
