The Volta River Authority (VRA) has projected minimal damage as it prepares for controlled water spillage from the Akosombo Dam in the coming weeks.

The announcement follows lessons from previous spillage events, particularly the intensified September 15, 2023 spillage. During that period, approximately 39,000 residents were displaced, and significant agricultural lands were affected over three weeks, impacting eight districts across Asuogyaman, Shai Osudoku, North Tongu, Central Tongu, South Tongu, Anlo, Keta Municipal, Ketu South Municipal, and Ada East.

Ben Sackey, VRA’s Director of Environment and Sustainable Development, highlighted ongoing stakeholder engagements aimed at ensuring comprehensive preparation and mitigation measures ahead of the spillage.

“We have been conducting annual educational sessions since 2011, though participation has been limited. However, recent events have underscored the need for broader community involvement,” Sackey emphasized.

The VRA reiterated its commitment to safeguarding communities and farmlands downstream, affirming that the upcoming spillage would be managed with stringent controls to prevent widespread damage.

The Akosombo Dam, a critical hydroelectric facility on the Volta River, plays a pivotal role in Ghana’s energy production and water resource management. It necessitates careful planning and public awareness before any spillage operations.
