The Volta River Authority (VRA) has reinforced its aid efforts for individuals affected by the controlled spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams in 2023.

In a recent gesture of solidarity, the VRA provided essential relief items to the North District Assembly to support those residing in safe havens across the North Tongu, Shia-Osudoku, and Central Tongu districts.

The donation, which included 300 bags of maize, 200 bags of gari, 150 bags of beans, 300 bags of rice, 150 boxes of oil, and 100 boxes of mackerel, underscores the VRA’s ongoing commitment to the well-being of spillage-affected communities. Mr Benjamin Arhin Sackey, Director for Environment and Sustainable Development at VRA, conveyed the items to the District Chief Executive on behalf of the VRA’s Chief Executive, emphasizing their dedication to assisting those impacted by the spillage.

“We remain steadfast in our collaboration with NADMO, District Assemblies, and response agencies to ensure the restoration of affected persons,” stated Mr Sackey, emphasizing the VRA’s proactive role in the recovery process and instilling confidence in our efforts.

Hon. Divine Osborn Fenu, North Tongu District Chief Executive, expressed gratitude for VRA’s consistent support, affirming the government’s commitment to facilitating the full recovery of all affected individuals.

Mr Seji Saji, Deputy Director General (Technical & Reforms) at NADMO, highlighted the ongoing efforts to accommodate individuals still residing in safe havens. He underscored that the donated items are critical as the government works towards comprehensive restoration of livelihoods and properties, instilling hope in the audience.

“We anticipate the swift completion of resettlement facilities to enable affected persons to resume normal lives,” Mr Saji commented, noting concurrent measures by the Ministries of Food and Agriculture to rehabilitate livelihoods through seedling distribution and agricultural support.

The collaborative initiative reflects a concerted effort to alleviate the spillage’s impact, demonstrating solidarity and support for affected communities as recovery efforts continue.
