University of Energy and Natural Resources

The Wassa Association of Communities Affected by Mining (WACAM) has inaugurated a student’s club at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) at Fiapre, near Sunyani.

The UENR chapter of the WACAM Tertiary Student’s Club seeks to mentor students to become active advocates for responsible mining and the protection of the environment.

Mrs Hannah Owusu-Koranteng, the Associate Executive Director of WACAM, said the formation of the club was in line with her organization’s youth mentoring programme being supported by Care Ghana, an international Non-Governmental Organization.

She said youth mentoring was key to environmental sustainability because, as future leaders, they ought to be trained and imbibed with the spirit of patriotism to enable them to grow into national assets.

Mrs Hannah-Koranteng said the menace of irresponsible mining remained a national canker and required collective approach to tackle.

She said activities of indiscriminate commercial mining, both legal and illegal, continued to destroy genetic resources, communities, wildlife, river bodies and eco-tourism and worsened the plight of local people directly or indirectly.

Mr Thomas Agyei, a lecturer at the Environmental Department of the University, and patron of the club, said environmental sustainability was a shared and collective responsibility.

He said if the youth were well conscientised they would accept, protect and safeguard the environment and remain active critics against unscrupulous human activities which destroyed it.

Mr Clement Anaba, the President of the club, entreated Ghanaians to stop the blame game and join hands to find lasting solutions to the destruction of the environment.
