The World Boxing Association Assembly (WBA) ratified this Thursday to Jesús Mendoza in his position as President of the pioneering body for the period 2020-2025, with the affirmative vote of all its members, with the intention of continuing the modernization process that has developed in recent years.
Faced with the proposal of an electoral process in accordance with the end of this period 2015-2020, the assembly as full decided to exhaust the statutory rules and re-elect Gilberto Jesús Mendoza by acclamation. The WBA has not stopped working and has created a path through online platforms such as GoToMeeting, so that its members in all five continents can discuss different topics of interest, despite of the distance. In the Assembly, the electoral commission was called, which was made by Francisco Piña, Jesper Jensen and Renzo Bagnariol all them members of the board. Since there were no additional nominations for the position, a vote was called by the members, who unanimously elected Mendoza for a new term, who had a great performance at the head of the WBA between 2015 and 2020.
The 10 members allow to vote, agreed to vote online this past Thursday in the morning. Renzo Bagnariol, from Nicaragua; Gustavo Padilla, from Panama; Carlos Chávez, from Venezuela; Shivana Inalsingh, from Trinidad and Tobago; George Martínez, from Canada; Maiana Borissova, from Bulgaria; Francisco Piña, from Colombia; Julio Quintero, from Venezuela; Luis Pabón, from Puerto Rico and Mendoza himself, from Venezuela, gave their vote in favour of the continuation of the current president’s project. In addition, 25 members with voice on the board also supported the decision and gave their confidence to Mendoza, with the newness that for the first time in history there was participation of Mexican members represented by Miguel Torruco and Alfredo Polanco.
“Once again, my gratitude to all who give me this vote of confidence, to all who adhere to the work plan of the last five years. We still have to continue and there are still things to do. We will continue to make progress in things like getting closer to the athlete and systematic development”, Mendoza assured to all members of the board after his re-election.
The president recalled the words of his father and emeritus president of the organization, Gilberto Mendoza: “I think my father’s word fits here; we can do it, let’s do it, let’s do it together. This is how he wanted to act. We must remain united”.
“I am thankful for allowing me to be part of something historical. It is complex, we have done productive things. Thanks to the doctors, the officers, the academy, I want to tell you that they you all continue to be the pillars of my presidency. Now we want to put effort into information technology, among other things, but regardless of any system we have, human quality and the people who accompany us are important. Thank you very much to the directors. I have to thank all of you, you are too important”, Mendoza said.
The actual president of the WBA was ratified thanks to the great work he has done in the last five years. Under his management, the WBA has had achievements never seen before such as, the creation of the WBA Academy for the systematic development of sport, the rapprochement with countries such as China, Russia and Mexico, the transformation of the entity into a professional and amateur body, to put its ‘grain of sand’ and help rescue boxing in all areas, in addition to taking advantage of new communication tools to carry out the work effectively and adapted to the times.
