Mr Simons Sekyim, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga North, has says the Assembly is determined to ensure that all trees planted this year grow to maturity to make the Green Ghana initiative a success.

He said consequently, the Assembly has planned to plant 35,000 trees this year in the municipality, and out of the figure, 5,000 tree seedlings have been distributed to public schools, resident associations, homeowners, churches, mosques, shop-owners among others.

Mr Sekyim made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency when he led assembly members and his officers to undertake tree planting exercise in the area to commemorate this year’s Green Ghana Day.

He said the Tijaniyaa Muslim Council had taken the lead and planted 1,000 trees and expressed the hope that other groups would follow.

The MCE said trees played an essential role in mitigating the impact of climate change, and that tree planting was a significant step that could help protect the planet and improve health.
He suggested the institution of award competition among the citizenry to encourage the nurturing of trees to their maturity.

Mr Moses Anim, the Member of Parliament for Trobu Constituency, urged stakeholders to own the tree planting exercise to ensure its sustainability, saying the climate change had come about as a result of human negative activities towards the environment.

“We can gradually restore the adverse effect of the weather through massive tree planting exercises,” he said, adding that with the wisdom of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in initiating the programme, more trees would cover the land surface of Ghana to absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen to promote human health

Nii Kortey Boi II, the Chief of Ofankor called on Ghanaians to support the programme to make it a success.
