President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has hailed the Accra-Tema Motorway Expansion Project as a significant step in modernizing Ghana’s infrastructure and maintaining national competitiveness.

On August 26, 2024, President Akufo-Addo officiated the sod-cutting ceremony for the project, which aims to enhance one of Ghana’s most crucial transportation routes.

Initially inaugurated in 1965 by Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, the Accra-Tema Motorway has been a critical conduit, handling an average of 45,000 vehicles daily.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the project’s importance in renewing this legacy to benefit future generations.

The expansion is notable for being Ghana’s first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in road infrastructure.

“By combining the resources and expertise of both the public and private sectors, supported by the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), we are establishing a new benchmark for infrastructure development,” Akufo-Addo stated on Facebook.

The project is divided into three phases, with the first covering the Accra-Tema Motorway Roundabout to the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, which is expected to improve connectivity and drive economic growth.

In addition to the motorway expansion, the government is advancing other significant infrastructure initiatives, including the dualization of major roads and improvements funded by the Government of Ghana and the African Development Bank.

Akufo-Addo also expressed gratitude to the various agencies involved and highlighted that the contractor for the first phase, M/S Maripoma Enterprise Ltd., is a fully Ghanaian-owned company.

“This is a testament to the capability and ingenuity of our domestic enterprises,” he said, affirming the commitment to building a modern, connected Ghana.
