Residents and chiefs in communities across the Western North Region of Ghana have raised a chorus of complaints regarding the deteriorating state of road infrastructure following the Minister of Roads and Highways’ recent visit to the area.
The outcry comes as locals await the fulfilment of President Akufo-Addo’s 2017 promises to improve road conditions. Despite ongoing efforts by the government to decentralize development in the region, these pledges still need to be fulfilled.
The onset of the rainy season has exacerbated the plight of road users and motorists in significant communities such as Boazan, Juaboso, Bodi, and Bibiani. Commercial drivers, in particular, lament the financial burden of frequent vehicle maintenance due to the damaging effects of poor road conditions.
“The road is so bad that previously we used to spend 15 minutes on it, but now we spend an hour and a half on it to reach our destination; we’re pleading with authorities to come to our aid,” a frustrated driver said.
Residents expressed cautious optimism following the visit by the Roads and Highways Ministry delegation led by Minister Francis Asenso Boakye. However, they emphasized that their satisfaction hinges on tangible improvements to the road network.
Minister Asenso Boakye acknowledged the challenges during his inspection and assured residents of ongoing efforts to address the road infrastructure deficits. He highlighted areas where road repairs are planned, including the Benkyima junction to Juaboso route, slated for imminent contractor intervention.
“We have seen some major road works going on there. And very soon, a contractor will come to the site,” assured Minister Asenso Boakye.
Despite these assurances, local chiefs continue to appeal to authorities for urgent action to alleviate the road crisis, emphasizing the critical role of improved infrastructure in enhancing local livelihoods and economic activities.
The situation underscores ongoing tensions between governmental promises and the practical challenges faced by communities dependent on reliable road networks for daily life and economic prosperity.
