Will Tariq Lamptey’s Career Ever Get Off the Ground?

Of all the precocious talents that Brighton & Hove Albion have had on the books in recent years, Tariq Lamptey is near the top of the list. The 23-year-old is a product of the Chelsea and Brighton academies and has been in the England international setup since 2018 when he was in the U18 side.

Because of the sheer abundance of world-class right backs for the Three Lions, Lamptey opted to change allegiance and became a Ghanaian international in 2022. However, the unfortunate fact is that his career seems to be stalling as he keeps getting burdened with serious injuries.

Lamptey Has Spent a Lot of Time on the Sidelines

Since the 2020-21 season when Lamptey made his debut for Brighton, he has spent 383 days out injured. These have been from seven separate incidents, with the longest spell on the sidelines lasting 196 days in the 2020-21 campaign. In three and a half seasons, the player has only notched 73 Premier League appearances for his team. This has meant that he hasn’t been able to establish himself as a first team regular or build up any form for long periods of time.

The most recent complaint for Lamptey, reported by Ghanaweb, was a knee injury that he picked up towards the back end of last season. This meant that Roberto De Zerbi had to alter his plans and push for European qualification without the speedy Ghanaian. The shrewd tactician still managed to pull off an impressive league finish and has shown that he is more than comfortable with rotating his players on a regular basis. This is good news for Lamptey, as it means he will have plenty of chances to impress his manager when he is fit.

Fighting for a Place in Thrilling Brighton Side

The problem for Lamptey is that, during the time he has spent injured, the club has evolved massively. The Brighton of today is considerably more formidable than the one that the 23-year-old joined back in 2020. Now, Betway are offering odds of 100/30 at the time of writing for the Seagulls to finish in the top four this season, highlighting just how far they have come under De Zerbi. The site is one of the top recommendations for Ghanaian bettors from BetBonus, listed as one of the best foreign brands in the region. Players can pick up some free bets after registering if they follow the instructions.

As Brighton have sold players for massive sums of money, they have been able to bring in new talents that they couldn’t have afforded before. Luckily for Lamptey, the club haven’t yet splashed the cash on a right back, with De Zerbi preferring to use the likes of Joël Veltman and Pascal Groß in the position. That means, if Lamptey can stay fit, he will have the chance to establish himself as the first choice right back.

The Mirror reported how Lamptey was an England prodigy that the Three Lions setup simply couldn’t accommodate. He could be a real asset for Ghana in the future if he can progress in his development. Now is a crucial stage for Lamptey, and if he keeps picking up injuries, he may never become the world-class player that many expect him to be.
