Yesterday Radio 1XTRA kicked off its very special week of music its destination… Africa. I am fortunate to be able to listen to whatever I want at work and have excitedly been anticipating this week, as I love the Afrobeats. Its something that I feel personally about and it really reminds me of my childhood when i lived in Africa. I remember its what I first fell in love with, I was only 8 at the time, but to discover all this music that wasn’t Bob Marley I was in my element. Its great that the UK is finally catching up with the motherhood of music, and this week 1XTRA is bringing the best of the hot new sounds for summer fresh from Lagos, Nigeria; with young talented artists taking on the live lounge, doing interviews and freestyling with Charlie Sloth.
To me you cant hear and Afrobeat and not just want to dance and smile, it brings those ultimate feel good vibes that you just want to jiggle and shake too, as well though it really does give a sense of unity and community, everyone joins in whether it be with an instrument or some twisted dance move you could have never imagined.?In the 1970s the late Nigerian musician Fela Kuti revolutionised African music with the style he liked to call Afrobeat.?It is a combination of funk, jazz, high life, chants and traditional rhythms, and often included inflammatory political messages. It has given a new found pride for many UK African artists, and in fact most now find it more important to go and break Africa than America.
Wizkid had it all in his hands Monday at midday, being the first to brace the live lounge with his soulful tunes, the artist who can sometimes be known as the African ‘Justin Bieber,’ this 23 year old in no newcomer to fame, as he is one of the hottest right now. In February he became the 1st Nigerian Musician to reach 1 million followers on twitter, he has been up for nomination for countless awards including the MOBO’s, and won the award for Best International Act with BET, this kid is on fire, and he absolutely smashed it in the studio too, with his rendition of Bob Marley, my that was just something else.
Its not all about the Afrobeats this week however as once the weekend hits youll be getting some funky tunes from Africa’s finest housemasters, all thanks to DJ Edu, who flew over to get this amazing content. Stay tuned all week with 1XTRA as its going down with Destination Africa, showcasting the hottest talent form the good vibes of the motherland.
