British newspaper Daily Mail, which identified the women as Susan Brown, reported that she had arrived to the island that day on board the Marco Polo cruise ship with her husband.

An argument between the married couple led to their one-month holiday to be cut short and they decided to catch a plane back from Madeira to England. However Brown lost sight of her husband, Michael Brown, and thought he had returned to the Marco Polo ship.

Watching the ship pass through the city Santa Cruz where the airport is based, she threw herself into the sea and tried to catch it.

Luckily, fishermen heard her struggling and saw the woman in the dark. She had signs of hypothermia and was admitted to hospital. Enditem
