A woman was on Tuesday evening trampled to death by an elephant in Kajiado county, southeast Kenya, wildlife officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said the woman died from wounds inflicted on her after being trampled by the elephant at Olgulului Group Ranch in Olmoti Area of Kajiado.
“The deceased had gone inside the ranch to collect firewood together with a friend when the animal pounced on them,” Ngugi Gecaga, KWS acting head corporate communications said in a statement issued in Nairobi.
Gecaga noted that KWS team from Amboseli National Park on patrol rushed to the scene after getting information from the friend of the deceased and secured the body.
He said that a team from KWS has informed the immediate family members of the incident and consoled them. A friend to the deceased escaped unhurt.
The latest incident comes amid surge in cases of human-wildlife conflict which also poses a threat to wildlife survival needs.
The government has so far compensated 452 human deaths, 4,555 human injuries, 5,073 crop damage cases, 3,012 livestock predation cases and 33 for property destruction, according to KWS. Enditem
