A day’s stakeholders’ workshop aimed at validating the Sector Strategic Development Plan (SSDP), a plan expected to make it easier for Government to prioritise, fund and co-ordinate the water sector effectively, has been held in Accra.

The SSDP when completed, would serve as a single point of reference for all water sector programmes and projects and articulate the priorities assigned by government in the implementation of its national Water Policy in the medium to long-term.

In a speech read on his behalf at the workshop in Accra on Wednesday, Mr Enoch Teye Mensah, Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing (MWRWH), said government was not insensible to the crucial role that water security and sanitation played in the country’s socio-economic development.

He said government remained committed towards providing Ghanaians access to safe and potable water and basic sanitation to meet national targets as well as the Millennium Development Goals.

Mr Mensah said government would commit resources to ensure that the sector’s goal of achieving universal coverage by the 2025 would be realised.

He urged the participants to make meaningful inputs towards the development of the plan.

The SSDP had undergone various stages of discussions, including stakeholder consultative workshops and a high-level meeting with Mr Alban Bagbin, former Minister of MWRWH with the aim of enriching the plan and making the citizenry own it.
