Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, the King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, is set to embark on a significant visit to the Nayiri, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, the Overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom.

The visit, scheduled for Sunday, July 28, will occur at Nayiri’s royal palace in Nalerigu, located in the North East Region of Ghana.

According to a statement from the Yagbonwura’s spokesperson, Benkromwura Seidu Saaka Bakari, the visit is part of a broader initiative to strengthen relations with other kingdoms and promote lasting peace.

The two monarchs are expected to discuss strategies for resolving ongoing land disputes between the Gonjas and Mamprusis in the North Gonja District, specifically around Lukula.

“This visit underscores the Yagbonwura’s commitment to fostering stronger ties with neighbouring kingdoms and ensuring enduring peaceful coexistence,” said Bakari.

The meeting will also address boundary disputes and aim to demonstrate the peaceful nature of the two kingdoms as they head into a politically significant year. Candidates from both regions will be featured in the 2024 elections.

This marks the Yagbonwura’s second historic visit since ascending to the Yagbon Skins in March 2023. Earlier this year, in May, he visited the Gbewa Palace in Yendi for a productive dialogue with Ya-Na Abukari II, the King of Dagbon.

The longstanding friendship between the Gonjas and Mamprusis has spanned several centuries. The Yagbonwura has invited all sons and daughters of Gonjaland to join this historic event, highlighting the importance of unity and collaboration among the kingdoms.

“This visit is not only a testament to our rich history but also an opportunity to set a positive example for the nation,” Bakari added.
