In Accra, youth groups led by the determined Coalition of La Associations and the GaDangme Coalition Against Land Injustice are set to stage demonstrations starting Tuesday, July 30.
The protests are aimed at condemning what they perceive as the unjust acquisition of lands by political entities across the Greater Accra Region.
Central to their grievances is the Trade Fair land, encompassing areas currently occupied by Labadi Beach and La Palm Royal Beach Hotels. The demonstrators claim that the original landowners still need proper compensation as mandated by law.
Further exacerbating tensions, the groups have expressed alarm over plans to redevelop Prisons Service lands in Cantonments for commercial purposes, potentially displacing current facilities.
In response to mounting pressure, the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, a key legislative body responsible for overseeing defence and security matters, has announced plans to investigate the concerns raised by the youth groups. Scheduled visits to the Ghana Prisons Service Barracks at Cantonments and the Prisons Service land in Roman Ridge are slated for Tuesday.
The protests underscore simmering discontent over land rights and development practices in Ghana’s capital, highlighting a contentious issue that continues to resonate deeply among local communities and political stakeholders alike. We urge the public to support the youth groups in their fight for justice and fair treatment.
