The youth of Sabronum in the Ahafo-Ano South East District of the Ashanti Region have pledged to take drastic measures to prevent illegal mining in their community.
The commitment follows recent developments in which illegal mining activities, locally known as “galamsey,” have polluted the area’s sole water source.
The young residents have called on the Asantehene to investigate the situation, citing suspicions that some traditional leaders might be involved in or supportive of the illegal mining operations.
Gideon Adu Boahen, a youth leader, expressed the community’s frustration, stating, “Because most of our leaders are behind the illegal mining activity, they don’t want us to wage war against the menace.
But because we love our community, we have decided to use every means possible to protect our land.”
The youth have warned that they will resort to forceful measures if necessary.
Akwasi Boakye declared, “Beginning today, every mining equipment in Sabronum will be removed by force.
We will fight it even if it costs us our lives. Whether the community leaders agree to our demands or not, we will end galamsey in our area.”
Local farmers have reported significant disruptions, including carrying water with them to their fields due to the contamination of water sources.
Despite ongoing government efforts to curb illegal mining, the conflict remains a persistent challenge in Ghana.
