Two people have been arrested for illegally collecting money from patients seeking COVID-19 tests at the country’s highest referral hospital, a senior government official said on Thursday.

Health minister Jonas Chanda said disciplinary action has been taken against the two individuals following revelations by a local television station that they were collecting money from patients for COVID-19 tests at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, the country’s capital.

He said in a release that one person was already in police custody while investigations have been instituted extending to several departments to establish the full extent of dishonest dealings.

The Zambian minister expressed concern that while the government was working tirelessly to restore the confidence partners and Zambians have in the health system, some unscrupulous individuals have been taking advantage of people seeking health care services.

He has since warned workers in the ministry against engaging in dubious activities, adding that disciplinary action will be meted out against anyone found engaging in such activities. Enditem
