Authorities in Zambia on Thursday refuted reports that the country has relaxed its surveillance system against the coronavirus.
Victor Mukonka, Director of the Zambia National Public Health Institute said contrary to the assertions, the surveillance and screening measures have been intensified. In a radio interview on Hot FM, the official said the government was working with other stakeholders to ensure that there was no case of coronavirus, adding that security at border entries have been tightened.
He further said the Ministry of Health was working with the Chinese embassy to ensure that those returning were taken care of.
“A lot of things have changed and we have been transparent in our dealings so far. We are not taking things lightly,” he said. He however said Zambia has not recorded any cases and that 16 people who were recently quarantined after returning to Zambia were found with no virus.
