Zambia launches new birth registration system

Zambia on Thursday launched a new system aimed at strengthening the registration of new births in the country.

In remarks delivered during the launch, the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jacob Mwiimbu said the new birth certificate template was aimed at strengthening civil registration and providing vital information to policymakers.

While saying a birth certificate is every child’s formal inclusion in society and crucial for accessing social services and protection of legal rights, the Zambian minister warned the current birth registration by citizens had been a source of concern as less than 20 percent of children below five years were registered.

United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator Coumba Mar Gadio said legal identity is the basic characteristic of an individual’s identity and must be protected, hoping the launch of the birth templates would lay a firm foundation for Zambia’s sustainable legal identity system.

Registrar-General Brenda Banda said the birth and death certificate templates were part of the greater effort toward transforming the legal identity system in the country. Enditem
