Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (ZESCO) was the main source of imported electricity for Botswana in July-September 2023, according to Statistics Botswana data.

A brief on electricity generation and distribution from Statistics Botswana for the third quarter, issued Thursday, showed that the amount of imported electricity fell by 17.7 percent as compared to the previous quarter, from 464,603 MWH to 382,426 MWH.

ZESCO accounted for 58.8 percent of Botswana’s total electricity import during the quarter, followed by Electricidade de Mocambique (EDM), 25.4 percent.
Other supplies were Nampower, Cross-border Electricity Markets, the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), and Eskom respectively, each accounting for 5.8 percent, 5.6 percent, 2.2 percent and 2.1 percent, respectively.

“The downward trend indicates that the country’s continued effort to generate adequate electricity to meet domestic demand has led to the decreased reliance on electricity imports,” said Burton Mguni, the statistician general.

According to Statistics Botswana, the generation of electricity in Botswana started in 1985 with a coal-fired thermal power station at Morupule.
Before that, most of Botswana’s electricity was imported from South Africa’s power utility, Eskom.

In 2008, South Africa’s electricity demand started to exceed its supply, resulting in the South African government restricting power exports. As a result, Botswana and the entire Southern African region experienced massive power shortages because of the reduced electricity imports from South Africa.
