The Zambia Medical Association (ZMA), the official representative of the medical profession, has urged the government to expedite the purchase of more personal protective equipment for the health workers.
In a statement, ZMA expressed concern that its members have contracted the disease during the course of duty.
The association said it sympathizes with the medical practitioners and their families.
Nine health workers have so far contracted the disease and are currently admitted in isolation facilities.
Meanwhile, Mwelwa Muleya, the spokesperson of the Human Rights Commission (HRC), said the human rights body was concerned at the increasing number of health workers testing positive for COVID-19.
“The increasing number of medical personnel contracting COVID-19 during the course of duty is a reflection of inadequacies in their protection and highly unsafe working environment they are exposed to,” he said.
According to him, there is a need to prioritize the protection of health workers from contracting COVID-19 which was not only for their own safety but that of their families and the patients. Enditem
