The Zambian government said on Friday that it was in the process of carrying out consultations with stakeholders with a view of reviewing the country’s school calendar.

David Mabumba, Minister of General Education, said the aim of reviewing the school calendar was to ensure that the contact between teachers and pupils was increased.

The Zambian minister said in parliament that various stakeholders, including teacher unions, parents and lawmakers will be involved in the review process and that the review was intended to ensure that the school calendar conformed to what was happening in the region.

According to him, Zambia was the only country in the southern African region which has many school holidays, resulting in less time between the teachers and pupils.

The review, he said, was also aimed at ensuring the need to introduce school holidays during winter and the rain season, adding that children resort to staying away from school during these periods. Enditem
