Immigration authorities in Zambia arrested 153 prohibited immigrants as they celebrated Easter at a local church in the country’s capital on Sunday, a statement obtained on Monday said.
Officers from the Immigration Department swung in action and arrested the prohibited immigrants as part of the clean-up exercise conducted in conjunction with the department responsible for registration of churches.
“The aim of the operation was primarily to check whether or not the church was duly registered with the registrar and also check on the immigration status of the congregants,” Namati Nshinka, the immigration department’s spokesperson said.
Among those arrested include Burundians, Congolese and Tanzanian nationals who were at the church for a special Easter celebration.
The official added that all those arrested will undergo a thorough screening process and that those who will be found with relevant documents will be released.
