Anti-drug authorities in Zambia on Wednesday said they arrested 50 people for allegedly trafficking in over 60 kilograms of cannabis.

The suspects, including 46 males and four females, were arrested in a notorious shanty compound in Chibolya in Lusaka, the country’s capital.

Theresa Katongo, Spokesperson of the Drug Enforcement Commission, said the suspects were arrested for trafficking in a total of 62.9 kilogram of dry loose cannabis.

This followed a joint operation conducted by security wings, she said in a statement.

Other seizures made during the operation included 3,350 tablets of diazepam which when taken with alcohol and other drugs may cause drowsiness.

And Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo confirmed the raid and seizure of the drugs and warned that security wings were determined to fight the illegal trade in drugs. Enditem
