Zambia’s disaster management agency on Monday dismissed reports by an international organization that the country will soon slide into famine, with 38 districts already in the emergency phase.
Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit National Coordinator Chanda Kabwe said the reports were not true as a Vulnerability and Needs Assessment report has shown that 58 districts are in need of humanitarian support, with only three in emergency phase from October 2019 to March 2020.
He said in a statement that it was unfortunate that some cooperating partners would be issuing such alarming reports with incorrect statistics.
The government, he said, has since increased the allocation of relief food to the three districts from about 100 tonnes to 200 tonnes.
He further assured that the hunger situation was under control and that partners have already come on board to supplement government efforts. Enditem
