The Zambian government said on Tuesday that the project of constructing 300 new communication towers to enhance internet connectivity is on track and will be completed by the end of this year.
The new towers will be an addition to other towers constructed with the help of China.
In 2017, Zambia and China signed a framework agreement for phase two of the construction of about 1,000 communication towers.
Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati said the towers were meant to further improve connectivity after the information and communication technology (ICT) sector witnessed a growth of 28 percent in the country last year.
In remarks delivered at the inaugural ICT Consumer Dialogue Forum, Mutati said the completion of the towers will integrate more Zambians into the digital economy by providing broader access to online services.
According to him, the government was focused on making online services more accessible while promoting digital literacy to ensure the protection of citizens.
He urged the communication and technology regulator, the Zambia Information Communication Technology Authority (ZICTYA), to come up with solutions to make the internet safer.
