Former government workers, who have been waiting for their benefits for years, will start receiving money next week, a senior Zambian government official said on Thursday.

Minister of Justice Given Lubinda said payment of the overdue arrears to about 12,458 retirees will commence on Monday, June 8, 2020.

The government, he said, has secured about 508 million Zambian Kwacha, which will go towards dismantling the huge arrears owed to former government workers.

The Zambian minister, in remarks delivered at a press briefing, however, said not all retirees will be paid as the available funds were not enough for all retirees.

According to him, the process of paying the retirees has dragged because the government was conducting a verification exercise of all the names of the retirees which resulted in 4,300 names being removed because they were not eligible.

Former government workers in Zambia suffer the pain of getting their benefits once they leave the government. Retirees from other parts of the country have been camping opposite the justice ministry, waiting for their money. Enditem
