The Zambian government said on Monday that it attached great importance to regional integration efforts because of the immense benefits.
Danies Chisenda, Ministry of National Development Planning Permanent Secretary, called for an integrated approach and coordination of all government institutions, the private sector and civil society organizations for Zambia to fully benefit from southern African regional integration efforts.
“Government recognizes the importance of regional integration for fostering economic development, peace and security. Regional integration effectively strengthens the position of Zambia and helps our economy to smoothly integrate into the continental and global economy,” he said.
The remarks were delivered at a meeting of officials from various government ministries on regional integration efforts within the Southern African Development Community countries in Lusaka, the Zambian capital.
According to him, regional integration has over the years gained importance in the southern African region as it has now contributed to peace and security, which were prerequisite to economic development.
Regional integration has become a fundamental aspect of economic activity and play a key role in addressing challenges faced in industrial development, infrastructure development, energy and water sectors, and other developmental areas that cannot be addressed individually by a country but require collective efforts at the regional level, he added.
