A senior Zambian government official said on Friday that the country will not manage to migrate to digital television migration by the stated deadline of June due to financial constraints.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has set June this year as the deadline for all countries to migrate from analogue to digital television broadcasting.
But Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services Chishimba Kambwili, in a ministerial statement presented to parliament, said only major cities will be able to migrate by the stated June 17 deadline because the government has no money for the whole country to migrate at the same time.
The Zambian minister said the rest of the country will only be able to migrate from analogue to digital television broadcasting by the end of this year as the government continues to source for funds.
In December 2013, Zambia failed to meet the deadline to switch from analogue to digital television broadcasting which was set by the Southern African Development Community regional bloc. Enditem
