Zambia working towards maximizing AGOA benefits

The Zambian government said on Wednesday that it was working on measures aimed at ensuring that the country benefits from opportunities provided by the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), an initiative of the United States (US) meant to allow duty free access to selected African products.

Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Permanent Secretary Kayula Siame said among the measures include building capacity of small and medium enterprises to ensure that they produce more and meet the standards required by the US market.

She said the government was currently in talks with the US government to provide technical assistance for Zambian entrepreneurs in order to help them produce in large quantities for the American market.

According to her, there was need for technical support in the area of technology to enable small and medium enterprises harness new technology, increase capacity and meet international standards.

The government was also looking at improving the standards of products such as honey that were eligible under the AGOA initiative and others to ensure their adherence to international standards. Enditem
