A Zambia trade expert urged Chinese companies to consider setting up more manufacturing plants in Zambia that will supply goods to the regional market,
Trevor Simumba, a trade expert and Managing Director of Sub-Saharan Consulting Group, said China should consider Zambia as a manufacturing hub for Africa as it is centrally located.
He said Zambia was a very good location for Chinese investment as it is centrally located and land linked to eight countries.
“By investing in Zambia, they will have access to a market of over 400 million people in the region. Within SADC and COMESA, Zambia is at the center of eastern and southern Africa. So I think firstly, china should look to establish a manufacturing capacity here in Zambia and it should be done as joint ventures,” Simumba explained.
He said for the manufacturing plants to benefit locals, Chinese producers could partner with local small and medium sized enterprises.
“I think it is important for us to recognize that we cannot do without China but also China cannot do without us, we need each other and we need to cooperate and partner with each other,” he added. Enditem
