Zambian government assures of food security

The Zambian government on Monday denied reports that the country may plunge into food insecurity and assured that the country was food secure.

Chushi Kasanda, the Chief Government Spokesperson, said the government expects the price of mealie meal to soon start coming down as farmers start offloading the new harvests onto the market.

“Some sections of our society have in the recent past raised concerns about what they feel is a weak food security situation in the country, coupled with high mealie meal prices. I wish to assure the nation that the country is food secure beyond the next harvest,” she said in a statement.

She said the forecast survey results for the 2021/2022 agriculture season show that the country produced a total of 2.7 million metric tons of maize in addition to a carryover of 1.5 million metric tons, giving a total stock of 4.2 million metric tons.

The country’s total grain requirements for human, livestock, industrial and other uses stand at 3 million metric tons. Enditem
