Zambian Vice President Inonge Wina on Friday said the government has blocked the salaries of some individuals who were unqualified to receive their wages, including those who were already deceased.
A recent payroll cleanup for Copperbelt Province revealed that over 4,000 government workers were receiving salaries although some were dead, retired or dismissed, Wina told lawmakers in parliament regarding the government’s measures against the “ghost” workers.
The Zambian vice president said that 779 public workers were deemed unknown as they were dismissed, dead or resigned, and that 3,969 who appeared on the September payroll were not found during a headcount in the province.
She further warned that those found to have breached government regulations on payroll management would be turned over to law enforcement agencies. Enditem
