The Zambian government on Thursday said it has released funds meant to dismantle arrears owed to local contractors working on various road projects.

Minister of Finance Bwalya Ng’andu said his ministry has released funds to the National Road Fund Agency (NRFA), a government agency responsible for managing funds for road project, to be disbursed to contractors.

He said the target beneficiaries of the funds were local road contractors and consultants.

“The release of the funds is not only a cash flow stimulus for the targeted recipients but a demonstration of government’s commitment to the domestic arrears and dismantling strategy,” he said in a release from his office.

The minister further said the decision to dismantle the arrears was in line with President Edgar Lungu’s directive aimed at empowering local contractors.

The ministry, he said, will continue to strengthen its domestic resource mobilization efforts for the road sector.

Local contractors in Zambia have for a long time complained of non-payment of their money despite doing various road projects. Enditem
