Zambia’s female presidential contender fumes over results

Edith Nawakwi, leader of the opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) wondered how she could be getting zero votes even in her home village in northern Zambia and wondered how possible for her relatives not to vote for her.

She told reporters at the National Totaling Center that her party’s parallel voter tabulation system in one of the constituencies in northern Zambia has put her at 276 while the results from the electoral body had been put at 196.

“Are you telling me that even in Mwenzo where I was born where my father lives I can get zero votes? Even all our structure people who run our offices could not have voted for us. So I think there is someone moving my results and taking them to another candidate. Where are my results going?” she said.

The female presidential candidate has so far polled 14,592 votes out of 90 constituencies announced so far.

Main opposition contender Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party of the National Development (UPND) has also accused the ruling party was trying to manipulate figures, especially for constituencies in Lusaka, the country’s capital, a claim that has been denied by the ruling party.
