A report purported to have been issued by the Human Rights Commission on gross human rights violations has gone viral on social media.

The report has highlighted, among other things, that the country’s main opposition party, the United Party for National Development (UPND, was the most suppressed political party in the country.

But Florence Chibwesha, executive director of the human rights body said no such report has been issued, adding that no study has been undertaken of human rights violations in the country.

“The Human Rights Commission wishes to put the record straight that it has never undertaken a comparative analysis of the most suppressed political parties in Zambia, southern Africa or anywhere else,” she said in an emailed statement.

She said the report has nothing to do with the human rights body and urged stakeholders to ignore it.

“The Human Rights Commission is therefore deeply disheartened that its name is being dragged into matters that have nothing to do with its operations or activities. We are therefore appealing to the members of public to desist from bringing the name of the Human Rights Commission into disrepute as it is established to serve all persons in Zambia regardless of their socio-economic status or political affiliations,” she added.
