Zambia’s thermal power firm accuses power utility of failing to settle debts

Zambia’s thermal powered firm on Wednesday accused the country’s power utility of failing to settle debts for the electricity it has been supplied.

Maamba Collieries Limited, which produces about 300 megawatts of electricity at the coal-powered plant situated in the southern part of the country, sells some of the power to Zesco Limited, the state power utility.

But the thermal firm said the power utility has not been able to clear outstanding debts owed which was necessary to maintain efficient operations at the coal-fired power plant.

The company said it has not been able to keep up a robust maintenance program at its modern eco-friendly thermal plant due to continue shortfall in monthly payments of its power bills by Zesco Limited. Enditem
